IRD number checker

Paste a New Zealand IRD number, which is also a GST number, or up to fifty, and see whether each one is in the range Inland Revenue issues and whether its check digit adds up. Free, with no sign-up.

Up to 50. Eight or nine digits; spaces and dashes are ignored.

This checks how a number is built. Whether a business holds it, and whether it is registered for GST, is not something this page can say; theNZBN register is one place to look. Nothing you type is kept.

Questions people ask

Is an IRD number the same as a GST number?

For a business registered for GST in New Zealand, yes: its GST number is its IRD number, and that is the number a tax invoice carries.

What does the IRD number checker check?

That the number is eight or nine digits, inside the range Inland Revenue issues, and that its check digit adds up by Inland Revenue’s own method. A mistyped digit almost always breaks the check.

Does a valid result mean the business is registered?

No. A well-formed number can belong to a person, to a business that is not registered for GST, or to nobody. Ask the business, or look it up on the NZBN register.
