SAC code

A SAC code classifies a service under Indian GST and is printed on the tax invoice. What it is and how a consultancy chooses one.

SAC stands for Services Accounting Code. It is the classification Indian GST uses for services, the counterpart of the HSN code for goods, and it appears on each line of a tax invoice.

Professional, technical and business services sit under heading 9983. For example, 998346 covers technical testing and analysis services and 998331 covers engineering advisory services. A consultancy that sells more than one kind of service may need more than one code, so the code belongs to the work rather than to the firm.

In ReliTime

In ReliTime each job carries its own SAC code, printed on every invoice line for that job. A job with none falls back to the organisation’s default, visibly.

This is a guide, not tax advice. Check how it applies to your own supplies with your adviser.

Questions people ask

Can one invoice carry more than one SAC code?

Yes. The code is shown per line, so an invoice for two kinds of service can carry two codes.

Where do I find the right code for my service?

In the GST rate schedule for services published by the CBIC. Check the code for your own service with your tax adviser.

We set ReliTime up with a walkthrough rather than a sign-up form. We will take you through a working organisation, from a week of timesheets through approvals and work in progress to a GST invoice, answer your questions as we go, and set up yours.
