For structural engineering firms

Time tracking for structural engineering consultancies

A structural practice sells design by the stage: concept, detailed design, construction support. ReliTime records hours against those stages, bills them by the hour or as fixed-fee stages, and shows how far through its budget each one is.

Design stages as phases, with a budget on each

Set up each commission as a job, its design stages as phases, and the calculations, drawings and site visits as tasks. Budgets in hours sit on the job, each phase and each task.

  • A warning when a booking takes a phase near or past its budget, and the hours still recorded.
  • A job saved as a template, so the next commission starts with the same stages.
A job’s budget panel: hours quoted, booked and remaining for each phase, with one phase past its budget.

Fixed fees billed by stage

A job or one phase can be sold for a fixed fee, billed in stages as a percentage of it. Hours inside a fixed fee are never billed by the hour, and they still count towards the job’s budget and margin.

A GST tax invoice with lines for the work, CGST and SGST, and the total.

Site visits with their start and finish times

The day view shows a person’s day as blocks from start to finish, so a site visit is recorded with the times it actually ran as well as its hours.

The day view: a person’s day drawn as blocks from start to finish, each block a task with its hours.

Questions people ask

Can we bill some stages as a fixed fee and others by the hour?

Yes. A fixed fee can cover a whole job or a single phase. Hours booked to anything it covers are billed through its stages and never by the hour, and everything else bills by the hour as usual.

What happens to old invoices when a rate changes?

Nothing. A new rate starts on a date and never overwrites the old one, so re-running an earlier invoice prices it at the rate in force when the work was done.

Can different jobs carry different SAC codes?

Yes. Each job carries its own SAC code, and the invoice prints it on every line for that job. A job with none falls back to the organisation’s default, visibly, rather than inheriting one silently.

Can the person who runs a job approve the hours on it?

Yes. A job can name a manager, who may approve the weeks of people who booked time to that job, and sees a work-in-progress report limited to their own jobs.
